Job Opportunity: Culinary Creative & Kitchen Lead

Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery is seeking a passionate and talented individual to join our team as our Culinary Creative & Kitchen Lead. Nestled in the beautiful Niagara Peninsula, our winery offers a unique and welcoming experience for guests. We are looking for someone with a flair for creating delicious menus that complement our award-winning wines and the ability to bring those creations to life in our kitchen.  This is an inaugural and one-of-a-kind position.

About You:

You are a culinary enthusiast with a strong understanding of flavour pairings and a passion for fresh, seasonal ingredients. You thrive in a dynamic environment and possess the organizational skills to develop enticing menus and the hands-on expertise to execute them flawlessly. You are a self-starter, comfortable working independently and as part of a team, and dedicated to providing exceptional guest experiences.  You are dedicated to quality.

Responsibilities:

Menu Development:

  • Conceptualize and create innovative and appealing menus that highlight seasonal ingredients and pair beautifully with Sue-Ann Staff Estate Winery’s portfolio of wines.
  • Develop a variety of menu options, potentially including small plates, charcuterie boards, light lunches, and special event offerings.  Pizza and flatbread experience will be considered an asset.
  • Consider dietary restrictions and preferences when designing menus.
  • Source high-quality ingredients from local suppliers whenever possible.
  • Cost out menus effectively to ensure profitability.

Kitchen Execution (Thursday – Sunday, Approximately 80% of the Year):

  • Manage all aspects of kitchen operations during weekend service (Thursday through Sunday), the majority of the year.
  • Prepare and cook menu items to a high standard, ensuring consistency and quality.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient kitchen environment, adhering to all food safety regulations.
  • Manage inventory and order ingredients
  • Potentially supervise and guide any part-time kitchen support staff.
  • Ensure timely, professional, cordial and efficient service to guests.

Collaboration:

  • Work closely, efficiently and professionally with the winery team, including the tasting room and events staff, to understand guest needs and preferences.
  • Communicate effectively regarding menu offerings and any potential changes.
  • Contribute to the overall guest experience at the winery.

 

Requirements

Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in menu development and kitchen operations.
  • Strong culinary skills and a passion for creating delicious food.
  • Excellent knowledge of food safety and sanitation practices.
  • Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Always available Thursday to Sunday from May thru to mid-October; Friday (variable) to Sunday mid-October to early February; sporadic schedule February to mid-May (schedule event based)
  • Strong service skills. Preparation of food and service to clients will be necessary.
  • Experience working with local and seasonal ingredients is an asset.
  • Formal culinary training or equivalent experience is preferred.
  • A passion for wine and an understanding of food and wine pairing is a definite asset.

Compensation

Compensation: hourly based on experience.
